Tax on soft drinks will not fix obesity problem
Responding to the Heart Foundations calls for a special tax on soft drinks, Australian Beverages Council CEO Geoff Parker comments:
“Soft drinks are not to blame for obesity and tax will not solve the obesity problem in Australia. We all agree that combating obesity is more complicated than curbing the consumption of one single product.
“Many Australian’s are vocal in their opposition to a tax on sugary drinks. The best way forward is to help people address obesity at its root cause – education.
“Global evidence shows sugar taxes are unpopular and have been repealed in the majority of countries that introduced such a tax.”
