Non-Alcoholic Beverages Industry Welcomes New Federal Government Ministry

FRIDAY, 3 JUNE 2022, SYDNEY: The Australian Beverages Council Limited (ABCL) welcomes the Albanese Government’s establishment of a highly qualified Ministerial team to drive the transition to a circular economy, net zero and a robust domestic manufacturing landscape for Australia.

“As the peak body representing the non-alcoholic beverages industry nationally, we would like to personally congratulate Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Minister for Environment and Water; Hon Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy; Senator the Hon Jenny McAllister, Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy; and Hon Ed Husic MP, Minister for Industry and Science” says ABCL Chief Executive Officer Geoff Parker.

“The Government’s vison for a vibrant Australian circular economy in which domestic manufacturing, local innovation and recycled materials are prioritised aligns perfectly with our vision of a more sustainable and resilient nation. Our industry has consistently strived to be the most sustainable in the shopping trolley by designing and utilising recyclable drink packaging, establishing best practice manufacturing and recycling facilities and participating in Australia’s most successful product stewardship program in container deposit schemes (CDS).

We call on the new government to help us succeed in our mission to harmonise beverage caps collection across CDS and kerbside recycling nationally, as well as achieving the National Packaging Targets’ Australasian Recycling Logo adoption goal by accepting the Australian Packaging Covenant’s ARL/CDS logo across all jurisdictions’ container deposit schemes as an alternative to the regulated 10 cent wording.

The beverages industry is proud to continue as a trusted partner with the federal government to create jobs, enhance domestic industry and ensure the best outcomes for our communities and the environment.”

The ABCL participates in a wide suite of sustainability initiatives including assisting states establish container deposit schemes, participating in a number of national and international consultation groups, and assisting members achieve their sustainability goals. We are a proud member of APCO and a signatory to the ANZPAC Plastics Pact.
