ABCL Submission to Preventative Health SA Strategic Plan

The Australian Beverages Council has made a submission in response to Preventive Health SA’s draft Strategic Plan for Preventive Health Action 2026–2034.

The ABCL acknowledges the importance of addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases and supports evidence-based preventive health policies that reflect the latest scientific evidence. The submission emphasises that effective health policy should consider overall dietary patterns and broader lifestyle factors, rather than disproportionately targeting individual products or nutrients.

The ABCL highlights the significant role industry can play in improving public health outcomes through voluntary initiatives, including the industry’s Sugar Reduction Pledge, which achieved a 21 per cent reduction in sugar across signatory portfolios between 2015 and 2025.

The submission also calls for meaningful collaboration between government and industry to develop practical, balanced and effective preventive health measures. In addition, the ABCL recommends that the final strategy include a clear evaluation framework with transparent performance measures and robust accountability mechanisms to ensure policies are regularly assessed and informed by objective evidence.
