The ABCL has provided a response to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) on its Preliminary Position Paper for the Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) review.

FSANZ’s review assesses whether the current NIP format continues to meet its intended purpose, drawing on new consumer research, insights from its Consumer Insights Tracker, and extensive engagement with stakeholders across Australia and New Zealand.

In its preliminary position, FSANZ has found that the NIP remains a trusted and effective labelling tool, and that regulatory changes to the Food Standards Code are not required at this stage.

The ABCL supports this position. Our response reinforces the importance of maintaining a stable and trusted framework for nutrition labelling, while focusing efforts on improving consumer understanding. Findings from the review show that some elements of the NIP, such as serving size, %DI, and certain nutrients, are less well understood. The ABCL recommends addressing these areas through targeted consumer education rather than amendments to the Code, as improving nutrition literacy is likely to deliver greater benefits for informed decision-making.
